Saliheen & Farhana Goes To London 2016 from fazmals on Vimeo.

We always try to get some decent video footage whenever we travel to have something to remember it by and so this is our London trip video, as edited by my baby sister. You know, the one who is currently offering videography services? Heh heh. She is happy and ready to take on any assignments ranging from wedding, engagement, birthday, proposal, save the date, corporate, etc so if you have an event or project and need affordable videography services, you can contact her or see her portfolio here ok! She is talented and hardworking and can deliver quality work, I promise

And as always, I'll do an overview post after my trips so here it goes:

Our Travel Dates

16 September 2016 to 23 September 2016

Flight Itinerary & Journey Duration

Singapore to London via British Airways BA12: 14 hours
London to Singapore via British Airways BA11: 12 hours 50 minutes

It was our first time taking British Airways and Saliheen and I agree we would totally consider flying with British Airways next time since we had a pleasant experience onboard. Food was ok ok la, normal airplane fare and movie selection is pretty recent. We flew via an A380 aircraft and chose to sit on the upper deck, with the intention of stretching out at the back (where the staircase is) but we didn't have to do that in the end anyway. Saliheen slept through the WHOLE flight to London, only waking up for meals, can you believe it???

Oh, and can I mention how muskyil we are about our jet-lag this time round? Kenapa our jet-lag this time round macam lagi intense eh??? Saliheen and I have been on several long haul flights before and sure, we've experienced jet-lag especially bila part balek Singapore but it usually clears after 1 to 2 days seh. But this time it took 1 week for us to feel normal and sleep better again! Saliheen said it might be because our flights on this trip had lower cabin air pressure, which would cause a more intense jet-lag. Hm.

Time Difference

Singapore is 8 hours ahead of London. So if it's 12.00pm in Singapore, that means it's 4.00am in London.

Weather

Between 12 to 17 degrees (Autumn)

A few days before travelling, I went online to check the weather so boleh decide what to pack all. Sekali jeng jeng jeng, online articles said there was a heatwave sweeping across UK wtf?!?! And they were legit sources like this and this ok.

Even then we didn't want to risk it (low risk takers us...) so we brought clothing that would suit a warmer temperature but can still be layered in case of colder weather. Nasib baik we did that seh! It was wet and cold bila kita sampai and some friends told us we got lucky because the heatwave ended just as we arrived. Happy la laki aku the polar bear.

Why London?

To be honest, we didn't have any travel plans after Russia (which we travelled to in May). We did talk about possibly doing a short trip to Bangkok sometime later in the year but there weren't any intention to go for a longer trip to a further destination.

Then one day, his mum told us she had to attend a conference in London and asked whether we'd be interested to join her and his father for a family trip, alang alang boleh visit his brothers sekali. I think the idea of spending some time with his brothers was the pull factor for Saliheen to say yes! I know he misses his brothers very much and a family reunion is exactly what he needed to lepaskan rindu :)

Plus it was in September so it turned into a birthday trip for Saliheen hehe. Takkan asyik aku nya birthday je baru kita gi holiday, this time kasi chance pulak kat tauke! :P

London Accommodation

We stayed at Studios2Let apartment at North Gower Street, which is a minute's walk from Euston Station.

Pros: Super near to a main train station and various bus stops, many halal makan places (I think because the area banyak orang Muslim and there is a mosque behind our accommodation), halal provision store, there is Selfridges supermarket within walking distance, there is a garden for smoking, there is a kitchenette in the room so you can cook or warm up food if you want to.

Cons: Crazy small toilet (if you're claustrophobic it's not for you haha), no air-conditioning so it'll be hot and stuffy during summer (we stayed during cooler period so it was ok since we could open the windows + there was a fan in our room), no lifts so you have to drag your luggage all the way up the tiny staircase if you get a higher floor (we got rooms on the ground level so not an issue for us), very strict with check-in and out times, reception closes at 7pm so if you arrive anytime after that, you have to go to another location to pick up keys.

Based on our personal preferences, Saliheen and I would not have chosen to stay at Studios2Let because of the room itself, but since it was group effort with his family, we were happy to go along with the choice. On the overall, it was a decent stay and the location is excellent for getting out to anywhere else in London. And makanan halal berderet deret.

What Did We Do / Go In London?

As I've mentioned before, we didn't get to explore and learn the historic parts of London and that is a shame! Definitely something I want to do if I return to London, insya Allah.

Also, out of all the markets, I enjoyed Portobello Market the absolute most and it is the market I would return to if I had to choose only one market to visit in London. There were more interesting/yummy/attractive things to see and taste and buy, in my opinion, and the atmosphere is lively yet casual, which I like.

Availability of Halal Food

I think most people already know by now that it is pretty easy to get halal food in London, especially the Bayswater and North Gower areas. But don't worry so much la, jalan jalan mana mana pun mesti nanti nampak tempat makan yang halal atau Muslim-friendly. My favourite halal spots in London are The Meat & Co, Noodle Oodle and Stax Diner! Didn't get to try the popular Burgers & Lobsters because my brother-in-law called one of the outlets to verify the halal status and was told the halal menu is at another location (?) which is jauh from where we wanted to be so we didn't go in the end. Next time la eh.

I don't think I mentioned this but there is also a Malaysian Hall canteen at the Bayswater area so if for some reason you are really dying for a plate of nasi padang in London, that's where you need to be. Haha. Tapi jangan terperanjat eh kalau nampak the sign that says you're not allowed entry unless you're Malaysian lol. We passed off as Malaysians so tak kena soal or what la. So I don't know la how strict the staff are about that policy, but they probably don't care because I didn't see any staff checking passports or what, and we saw a few Middle Eastern looking people dining in the canteen anyway.

Airport Transfer

We hopped on the Heathrow Express to meet his brothers at Paddington Station then took an Uber to our accommodation. If you're travelling as a group, I actually wouldn't recommend taking the Heathrow Express because I think it's more economical and comfortable to arrange for a private car/van to bring you direct to your accommodation instead of paying £22.00 per pax for a single trip or £36.00 per pax for a return trip to naik the express train which might not stop at your accommodation area.

I already told Saliheen this prior to our trip la but he preferred to keep things "open" since we were travelling with his parents who might prefer something else. Betul betul sampai sana and dah naik the train, Saliheen asked me to arrange for a private car hire for our airport transfer back to Heathrow Airport kwa kwa. I went with Addison Lee - I saw their cars and their advertisements all over London so their marketing effort worked, I guess. Haha.

Transportation Around London

We used the public train system (locally referred to as "the tube") and buses to move all over London since it's more or less the same as our local train and bus system and is easy to understand. Also, get yourself an Oyster card! It works just like an Ez-link - you tap in and out of stations, and you can top up your cards at ticketing machines.

Their train fares are more expensive than what we pay in Singapore though, so try to walk as much as you can (which was what we did whenever walking is possible). As a gauge, we paid about £2.00 to £3.00 per trip (which equates to S$3.50 to S$5.00 per trip) kat London. Kita kat sini kena bayar S$1.50 per trip to naik train je dah merungut tak sudah. Haha.

For all those times when kita malas or penat or want to save time, we just booked Uber! It is very reliable and convenient to use in London so we were very happy about having that option for transport. Uhmmm, black cabs what?????

Where to Buy Souveniers

We bought t-shirt and magnet souveniers from a souvenier store in Queensway area whereas we bought biscuits, chocolates and tea souveniers from the Heathrow Airport. (Kita actually nak beli kat Selfridges but ran out of time hahaha) We randomly picked the brand Fortnum & Mason (there were SO many pretty and yummy stuff from many different brands) but it turned out to be a lucky random pick because their biscuits, chocolates and teas turned out to be really sedap and a hit amongst our family and friends. Nak lagi pls.

Availability of Wifi

As always, we rented the overseas wifi router from Changi Recommends! It was going for a promo price of S$12 per day, although I'm starting to think that the promo price is = actual price because dorang punya promo macam tak habis habis ah actually hahahaha. Not that I'm complaining, of course heh heh heh

Shopping in London

SUNGGUH BEST! I wouldn't say it's because of prices la because their prices are more or less the same as Singapore (although there were sales happening whilst I was there) but more of the design selection - I have more to choose from because the retail stores in London have a good stock of stuff in UK16/18 sizes!

Tops and dresses in lawa patterns tak banyak for plus-sized women like me in Singapore, and especially susah for me to dapat seluar. Kat sana macam macam colour, macam macam bentuk, macam macam pesyen. Especially kat Primark.

Research Resources

I depended heavily on my middle sister, my friends and my acquaintances who have travelled to London (and oh boy, there were many!), read travel blogs and did my research by reading all of the tips and stuff on Time Out London and Visit London. Have Halal Will Travel has an extensive guide (here) on eating out in London too! I wouldn't have known about the halal food section in Selfridges if not for their mention.

Would We Return to London for Vacation?

Yes, of course! I wouldn't say London is my ultimate favourite travel destination (Tokyo and NYC, you have my heart and my soul and my little finger too if that's your kind of thing) but I was very happy with this trip and enjoyed myself very much. There are many more things I want to see and do in London so a return trip sounds good to me heh heh

The Total Expenditure

I usually share my travel expenditure details so I don't have to dig for scraps of information here and there every time someone asks me how much he/she will need for a similar trip so here is the rough cost breakdown for our London trip:

01. Flight (via British Airways): Approximately S$800 per pax
02. Accommodation: S$100 to S$125 per night at Studios2Let Apartment
03. Express Train (1-way trip from Airport to Hotel): S$40.00 per pax
04. Meals: S$30.00 per meal per pax (can be lesser, this is an inflated estimate)
05. Uber Fares: S$10.00 to S$15.00 per trip (depending on distance)
06. Train Fares: S$3.50 to S$5.00 per pax per trip
07. Private Car Arrangement (1-way trip from Hotel to Airport): S$85.00
08. Souveniers for Family & Friends: S$150.00 to S$200.00
09. Museum Entrance Fees: Mostly free admission, with payment for special exhibitions
10. Tickets to Book of Mormon: S$100 per pax
11. London Eye & River Cruise Package: S$70.00 per pax
12. Wifi Router Rental: S$82.00 for 1 device (up to 10 connections)

Ultimately, like I always say, everyone has their own preferences and styles when it comes to travelling so it really depends on what you want to eat, what you want to see and where you want to go. And with that maka berakhirlah series blog saya untuk London kali ini, semoga berjumpa lagi di lain masa! 12 weeks to California baby, whut whut.

A Week In London: Day 7 - Borough Market, Tate Modern, Oxford Street

Tuesday, November 8, 2016

Not many pictures on this day because we wanted to take it easy and enjoy each other's company, especially since this will be the last day Saliheen and his brothers can spend time together in a long time! We only went to 2 places in the earlier part of the day, anyway; the Borough Market and Tate Modern.

Arrived at Borough Market very early in the morning and started the day right by having oysters for breakfast #yolo hahahaha. Honestly I would have balked at the idea of consuming oysters for breakfast when I was younger but after eating raw fish and oysters for breakfast on one lovely morning in Tokyo, I'm like????? Siapa ni yang decide what can or cannot be eaten as breakfast in the first place??? Apa ni qualifications dia???

(I'm probably very influenced by this "What Does The World Eat For Breakfast?" video - I watched it two years ago and it got me thinking about the concept of what constitutes as breakfast, the cultural effects and/or scientific reasoning if any, and the history/idea behind what is considered acceptable to be eaten in the mornings.

I mean, think about it - someone somewhere in another part of the world is probably balking so hard at the idea of eating rice cooked with coconut milk with fried chicken, fried anchovies with peanuts, an egg, a few slices of cucumber and spicy-sweet chilli paste. Know what I just described??? YOUR BELOVED NASI LEMAK BREAKFAST.

That's right - nasi freaking lemak. The one that sounds like a perfectly normal breakfast option to you if you're Singaporean or Malaysian, but probably sounds weird and foreign, maybe even gross, to some people in other parts of the world. Ok I hope I've made my point with this long ass explanation hahahahaha)

Ok back to my dear oysters, which is - let's be honest - the only thing that I was REALLY looking forward to in Borough Market hahaha. I think everyone in my life knows my OBSESSION with oysters so macam no brainer la kan aku akan melantak oysters kat situ.

One of my sister's friends, who is my fellow oyster hantu enthusiast (lolol) and has tried the oysters at Borough Market but not the ones in Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, even asked me to make a comparison review after I've tried the ones in Borough Market. I went with an open mind and heart but I gotta say that the oysters from Tsukiji Market wins it all for me. Are we even surprised that I feel this way, honey????? Hehehehehe. Now go and make plans to go to Tokyo Nadh, and drag my loser sister with you pls!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, the oysters at Borough Market were great of course but I still stand by my very strong opinion that oysters from anywhere else can never beat the oysters at Tsukiji Market!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My loves wait for my return pls!!!!!!!!!!! #tersampuk

Ok, before you think Borough Market only sells oysters hahaha, they have the usual market style fare too; pies and tarts and cookies and different types of fresh breads and fruits, as well as kitschy knick knacks like, you know, the usual stenciled tote bags and handmade jewelry and quirky badges kind of stuff. Fed ourselves some bread and brownies before walking over to our next destination of choice - Tate Modern! Took a picture at the Millennium Bridge with a view of the St Paul's Cathedral before we entered Tate Modern:

No awkward double chin close-up couple picture here because his brother was there to ambikkan gambar. Just awkward standing with our perut terjuntai ones hahahahaha

Just wanted to say that Saliheen and I are more receptive to art museums now even though we're still not art enthusiasts, mainly because of our experience at Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC. Refresher: We allocated less than a hour in MOMA because we didn't think we'd enjoy it much since we don't understand or appreciate art but it turned out to be one of the most memorable things in NYC for us (Read here). So now we've agreed that we will not write off any other art museum without exploring it first!

Tate Modern was great, and I really liked some of the exhibits, but ultimately I don't think it can beat the MOMA experience for me (personal opinion, of course). The style, concept and topic of ongoing exhibitions in the museum also plays a part in whether you will enjoy your time, I think? So really dependent on what's available when you visit each museum.

Went for lunch at a nearby Pret A Manger before it started raining down on us! So we grabbed an Uber back to our apartment to rest and wash up, before heading out to Oxford Street for one last hurrah. And by hurrah, I mean shopping hahahahaha

One of the the things I knew I had to get from Selfridges was the macarons from Pierre Herme!!!!! Remember my kimek friend Azrul??? He has been raving non-stop about them for the past years, way before I even made plans to go London, so now that I had the opportunity I was obviously gonna take it! Especially since it involved food hahahaha

Verdict??? D is for DELICIOUS, HUNTY

Every bite was orgasmic wtf!!! The crispiness of the shell, the flavours of the filling, ahhhhh so perfect and I love them all. I most definitely prefer them over Laduree macarons now.

But you know what else is also delicious and orgasmic?

This baby:

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Honestly, I didn't even think of getting this in London! It was our last night in London and we were walking around Selfridges with my in-laws when we saw the Givenchy store. Hovered at the store entrance, fawned over the Antigonas on display before Saliheen suggested I pick one up and sling it over my shoulders to see whether I'll still love it.

I did. Then Saliheen asked whether I wanted to get one now, I asked him incredulously "Are you serious" and the rest is...... predictable because I now have this baby sitting in a special compartment in my almari hehehehe. What made it even more awesome:- the weaker British pound and tourist tax deduction = bag costs lesser in London than in Singapore!

I still can't believe I have this baby for myself now la!!!!!!!!! I've blogged about how I fell in love with the Givenchy Antigona after I saw someone's retweet (I don't know if you know this Masrurah, but you were the culprit who made me terbabit!) and ahhhhhhhhhh, for me to have it and to hold it is pretty surreal. I've used this bag thrice since I got it, and every time I use it, I keep falling in love even more! Boleh ke gitu bercinta dengan bag #freedomtolove

The first time I wore the bag was when we took our flight back to Singapore the next morning, and it was fairly comfortable and easy to use. You know what was not comfortable and easy? Getting rid of our jetlag when we arrived back in Singapore hahahahaha

A Week In London: Day 6 - London Eye & River Thames Cruise

Monday, November 7, 2016

Woke up feeling sooooooo much better (after being sick the day before) so we got ready and went out early for all of the touristy things we wanted to do in London - go on a River Thames cruise, ride the London Eye and take pictures in front of Big Ben heh heh heh :D

Saliheen asked whether I wanted to take a picture inside / in front of London's iconic red telephone booth and I told him I didn't want to because it was so freaking kotor and berkeladak and busuk gila!!! All of them smelled of rotten food and urine wtf. All of the pictures that people take of themselves SMILING inside / in front of the red telephone booths????? ALL THOSE SMILES ARE LIES. LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahahaha! So anyway. We started our day with a River Thames cruise - unlike our river cruise experience in St Petersburg, we could appreciate it more since we understood what the tour guide was talking about lololol

I think I have pictures from the cruise but because I am a lousy blogger, I don't have them on my phone and cannot upload them onto my blog now kwa kwa kwa. Will do that once I have time la (penipu...) Although I'm not sure why I want to do that because our river cruise pictures mostly kena photobomb by PRC tourists who stood up, blocked everyone's views and took selfies of themselves throughout the cruise anyway ha ha ha ha haaa

The attractions we walked past while on our way to the cruise pier.

The river cruise we took is the kind that you can just get on or get off at any of its designated spots so we dropped off at Tower of London area with the intention of going on one of its guided tours. Saliheen has been on one before and told me it's good and educational and worth the entry! But because laki aku selalu confident tahap maharaja, he led us to the wrong way while trying to cari the entrance so kita tak jumpa jumpa the entrance hahahaha siak ah now I'm starting to think maybe we just have kentang luck when it comes to figuring out entrances if we don't do any research on it first lolol

By the time we figured out where the entrance was (it was right in front of the pier where we dropped off zzz), I was feeling a little woozy - I mean, I was mostly recovered from my fever and flu la but there was still belen belen that could activate balek kalau aku push myself too hard, y'know? So we abandoned the idea altogether, had lunch, people-watched, gobbled down some ice cream and boarded the river cruise back to the London Eye area.

Then we went on one of the capsules of London Eye! This was fun because I always wanted to know how it looked and felt like. We bought a combo ticket from the cruise operator (we got the River Thames cruise + London Eye ride combo, about £40 (S$70) per person) so all we had to do was flash the ticket to the London Eye staff when we arrived.

I was expecting a long wait that can cecah an hour but it was surprisingly fast - we jumped onto a capsule after less than 10 minutes of waiting??? Maybe because we were there at about 3 plus on a weekday afternoon so bukan peak period.

It was really nice being about to see all of London from an aerial view! Of course it's something you'll probably do only once in your lifetime so I guess I've used up mine - ride the London Eye once in my lifetime... check!

Messy hair don't care, baby, because I have a bokeh shot of the Big Ben behind me and that's all that matters in this blogging life woo hoo HAHAHAHAHA

Right now I'm happy to report that I do want to return to London one day insya Allah! Mostly because I really want to explore and understand the historic parts of London by going for that guided tour of Tower of London and joining one of the guided tours by Sandemans (specifically this one). We didn't really get to do all that because I fell sick + we spent more time on shopping and makan on this trip.

After that little touristy session, we went back to the apartment to wash up before dinner at Noodle Oodle (again hehe) with my in-laws. His brothers also recommended souvenir shopping in that area (Queensway, I think) so kita terus borong souveniers kat situ after dinner. And before we know it, besoknya dah our last full day in London! Almost time to rest in habuk atas almari baju wahai leather jacketku....... hahahaha

A Week In London: Day 5 - Buckingham Palace, Green Park & British Museum

Friday, November 4, 2016

Aaaaaaaand for the second time in a row, macam la takde timing lagi baik for all the kuman kuman to hit my immune system, I fell sick in the middle of my holiday in London wtf!!!

(Backstory: I fell sick halfway through my birthday trip in Moscow hahaha shut up)

I was already feeling a little feverish the day before but because I was SO determined to enjoy doing all of my favourite things, I managed to fight off the penyakit and I didn't fall completely sick until this day! Another mistake was eating disgustingly oily chicken wings in the morning the day before so it was inevitable I would also lose most of my voice - so let us welcome the return of my annual bapok voice hahahaha!

I lose (most of) my voice once a year, you see, and for 2016, it just so happened to hit me when I'm halfway through my London holiday. TENKZ ERRBADY TENKZ.

Which is why even though we planned to go out very early in the morning and arrive at the Buckingham Palace 2 hours before the changing of guards ceremony, we decided to take it slow and and left for the changing of guards ceremony an hour before it was due to start (It starts at 11.30am and lasts for 45 minutes, you can read more information here)

As Donald Trump would say it - YUUUGGGEEEEE mistake.

Buckingham Palace was packed like crazy balls and shorty me had to jingkit jingkit to try and see what was happening during the ceremony, Ingatkan boleh nampak bulu hidung sekali, rupanya nak nampak bulu songkok dorang pun susah, beb. I resorted to watching the ceremony on other people's mobile phones perched on selfie sticks kwa kwa kwaaa. Buat susah susah je naik train datang sini, kenapa tak tengok video kat Youtube je.....

Pictures above taken by Saliheen since he's taller and can see over heads, unlike me.

Below pictures taken after the changing of guards ceremony madness died down and most of the other people already left.

Below is a screenshot of loser me on Facetime with my sisters (and parents, not pictured), showing them the Buckingham Palace premises. My sisters told me they were embarrassed for me because I was holding my phone up high and twirling around to show them the palace hahahaha macam tak biasa je aku malukan korang HAHAHAHA

You know, I can never understand why people say they are embarrassed to do that i.e. to speak into a camera/camera-phone in public. Apa yang nak dimalukan??? You're a tourist and people think you're an idiot anyway, so you might as well do whatever makes you a happy tourist, as long as it doesn't endanger or harm anyone/anything else.

I mean... who the hell cares seh. Whoever saw me speaking animatedly into a camera-phone that day isn't going to remember me a few weeks or years from now and be, like, oh isn't that the girl who looked like an idiot while on Facetime with her sisters at Buckingham Palace??? Ain't nobody got that time for you like that, hunty.

Anyway. Lepas tu kita lepak for awhile at Green Park before walking back to the train station after our time at Buckingham Palace. Took some pictures of course:

Seen here clutching my pinggang like my life depended on it because my husband insisted it will make anyone look slimmer in pictures hahahahahaha macam paham je dektu, dah gemuk buat hal gemuk la! But I like to humour him so I did it anyway, and ended up looking like I got sakit perut or what sia. Kurusnya tidak hahaha.

Super nice shot of our Adidas Ultra Boost sneakers!!!!! Sooooooo comfy, it's ridiculous plz. I've learned my lesson after I mintak nyawa when my lousy shoes caused painful blisters to form on my feet on my third day in NYC so I knew I had to invest in a good, sturdy and comfortable pair of sneakers for travelling... Adidas Ultra Boost wins it all for me!

Lepas our outdoor photoshoot tak bertauliah, we took a train down to British Museum! I was really looking forward to this because I wanted to see its famous dome and inner courtyard for myself. As always, my pictures don't do justice so go Google for how the real thing looks like ok; it is pretty cool and grand in real life.

Jangan lupa posing cekak perut supaya tak nampak gemuk ye HAHAHAHAHA

No admission fees to masuk British Museum (i.e. free admission) but kena pay £16.50 (S$28.50) for entry to their special exhibition "Sunken Cities: Egypt's Lost Worlds" - we were interested so we paid for tickets. No pictures though, since no photography permitted. Meh.

Gambar tickets je sebagai bukti. Hahahaha.

It was an interesting exhibition though, very surreal and otherworldly in a way. Spent about 45 minutes in the special exhibition then we explored the rest of the regular displays .

I have more pictures in the camera but I want to publish this entry now so I guess I'll come back and add more pictures once I have time to do the transferring and uploading to blog la haha. The exhibitions were okay, Saliheen and I were kind of miffed at some parts because some of the artifacts were  - if you really think about it - technically robbed lifted from other communities and cultures but... it is what it is, I guess. Colonization already happened, sejarah dah berlaku, nak cakap apa lagi kan.

Left the British Museum after a couple of hours and we went back to the apartment to rest. Aku dah tak larat by that point of time so I slept in the apartment while Saliheen went out for dinner with his family. They brought back some soup and fruits for me though - they were so kind and sweet about it so I knew I had to man it up, telan some meds and be happy and healthy for what was left of our holiday - which I was! Hehe yay ok you wait ah for the next entry.
